Short UFO fact: [On 8th November, 1965, Dorothy Kilgallen, was found dead in her New York apartment. She was fully dressed and sitting upright in her bed. The police reported that she had died from taking a cocktail of alcohol and barbiturates. The notes of her interview with Ruby and the article she was writing on the case had disappeared. Luckily, she had given a friend a draft of her interview. Kilgallen was probably fearful for her own life, since several other writers who had worked on the Oswald / Ruby case had died under "unusual circumstances."]

Short UFO fact: [The Spitzbergen crash story first appeared in the German newspaper “Saarbrucker Zeitung” in June 1952. The article, entitled "Auf Spitzbergen landete Fliegende Untertasse", was soon picked up by several other German newspapers, with many of them citing “The Stuttgarter Tagerblatt” as the original source. The story was that jets of the Norwegian Air Force spotted a crashed UFO while flying over Spitzbergen on maneuvers. The craft was disc-shaped with a series of jets around the rim of the disc to make it spin. ]

Short UFO fact: [Charles Fort's "Superconstructions," 1890-1930. Charles Hoy Fort, from whom Forteans take their name, described various early UFO-type phenomena in his books New Lands, Lo!, and the Book of the Damned. Fort transcribed various reports that he took from serious scholarly journals of astronomy which described lights crossing the surface of the moon and other lights seen in the sky. Fort theorized - but never offered proof - that these lights were attached to gigantic "superconstructions" which came here from other planets, and mused that various falls of matter may have come from these ships. Tiffany Thayer, the president of the Fortean Society suggest during the 1947 wave that the mysterious UFOs might be extraterrestrial in origin. During this period, it was widely reported that mystic Nicholas Roerich had encountered a strange disclike object in the Himalayas, during his trip there in 1926.]

Short UFO fact: [During the 1930s, a sect was founded by Guy Ballard called the "I AM" movement. This sect is thought to have influenced the beliefs of Adamski and the early "contactees" and to have ties to the "Silver Shirts," who were a homegrown American fascist movement. Its other (distantly related) descendants include the Church Universal and Triumphant of Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and the Church of Scientology. Ballard claimed to have met the 'Ascended Masters,' one of which was the mysterious 17th-century Comte de-St. Germain. More interestingly, he claimed to have met a race of "Lemurians" which travelled around in "aerial boats" and lived underneath the mysterious Mt. Shasta, which features so significantly in the tales of the "Dweller on Two Worlds," Phylos the Tibetan. Mt. Shasta still seems to feature prominently in UFO lore, and the weird "hollow earth" cosmology of Richard Shaver and Ray Palmer which dominated UFOlogical thought for several years. ]
